B.Sc (Hons) Transport Management, University of Aston in Birmingham.

Having chosen his degree course by virtue of the accompanying picture of a West Midlands Travel bus in the prospectus, a subsequent rather eye-opening induction to the passenger transport industry, courtesy of two less than sparkling London bus operators, almost put the brakes on a lifelong career ambition. So Robin first really made his mark in the industry by writing about it, as deputy editor of revered and much-missed business publication Transit, in those distant pre-Twitter days when managing directors eagerly awaited their fortnightly copy on the doormat to find out the latest in the bus, rail and light rail sectors.

After six enjoyable years, Robin then returned to the sharp end as Commercial Manager for ground-breaking rural independent bus operator Norfolk Green. Already known for good, reliable, affordable operation, Robin was brought in to market and promote the business through innovative fares offers and original marketing techniques, including a proportionally large spend on commercial radio advertising. Huge brand loyalty and growth saw the acquisition of First’s local bus operation in 2011 after six years of cut-throat competition, as well as becoming the only independent operator ever to be crowned UK Bus Operator of the Year, in 2010.

A year’s break for him and his partner to buy and develop a catering business in Norfolk has now ended with his appointment as FWT Commercial Manager, with a specific remit to develop new products and services using TransXChange data and digital technologies, to support FWT’s traditional mapping and passenger information activities, and to an equally high standard for our clients. One part of this role is to assume responsibility for delivering passenger information to over 500 bus stops in Norfolk, including those he managed whilst at Norfolk Green, so he should feel quite at home!
